400 B.C.

Not much is left behind from Socrates but his beliefs and teachings were passed down through is students.

He‘s well known for his saying that a good man can’t be harmed. He believed and taught that people must care for their soul more then anything else. He taught others that if people had good intentions and stayed good, they would come out fine in the end, no matter if one was falsely prosecuted, which Socrates was. In the end Socrates died being falsely accused of a crime.

Socrates claimed to “know nothing” so he asked questions without answers.

"The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing." -Socrates

(5)

He believed that all knowledge is virtue. That all other qualities of people are important and can help but it can also be a downfall without wisdom and knowledge.

“Apology,” by plato, was written to defend Socrates. The “Apology” shows some of Socrates' teaching to always do and stay good. He argues the fear of the lack of knowledge and the surplus of ignorance was no match for Socrates, for Socrates could not fear the unknown, being death. Plato was a student of Socrates so a lot of Plato's writings included him as the main character

The teacher of Plato, Socrates is known as a founder of Western Philosophy.
